Neer Fanas is from the Jackfruit family. It is the most yummy variant I’ve ever eaten in Sindhudurg. I have said this previously and will repeat it once again here 😊 I’m mostly inclined towards vegetables more than seafood and chicken. I love any type of vegetable 😍

I don’t remember the first time I ate Neer Fanas but I do remember one such incident which made me fall in love with this vegetable. It is a Jackfruit variant but isn’t sweet at all. My aunt’s mother is from Goa, we had to park our bike and leave for Pune from Goa and she insisted us to have lunch.

She had made Neer Fanas Kaap or Neer Fanas Fry and it was basically all vegetarian that day. Nitin and I loved it to the core, it was truly exceptional 😊 and we still recollect that day. I knew Neer Fanas was made for me and could be easily found in Sindhudurg.

Neer Fanas is a Breadfruit. It has spikes on the outer covering like a jackfruit.

Crispy Tawa Fried Neer Fanas Kaap/Slices – Marinate Neer Fanas in Fish Masala, Turmeric, Coriander (optional). Keep this aside for 5 to 10 mins. Add salt, we skipped this before as we don’t need this watery. Take rava/semolina and rice flour in equal quantities, coat the Neer Fanas in this mixture and tawa fry it. They look crispy but are soft just like potato wedges. It tastes a level higher than potatoes 😍 do try this recipe.

Neer Fanaschi Bhaji/Breadfruit Vegetable – In a Kadai, add some oil, mustard seeds. Add chopped onions and green chilies, turmeric, salt. Allow the onions to turn light brown, time to add chopped Neer Fanas cubes. Cook this on low flame for 10 to 15mins. They cook quicker than potatoes. This vegetable is super soft and yummy in taste 🙂 Add fresh coriander and coconut if required. I usually have this with chapati or dal rice.
