Mess-free, travel-friendly food is a must! I love home-cooked food, but it’s not always practical to eat it when I’m out traveling. That’s why I have a few favorite food items I always carry with me. While the list changes sometimes, there are a few essentials that never leave my bag—they’ve been my saviors over the years. I’m sure we all have our favorite travel-friendly food.
Back when I lived in Pune, travel wasn’t frequent. But now that I live in a coastal area, I often visit Pune, and these food items always come along. Having a kid with us gives me the perfect reason to pack more—she usually asks for outside food, which we try to avoid. Still, when there are no options around, we offer it in moderation. Table of Contents
Healthy Snacks
These are usually available in any shops, or we make them at home. These include ghee-roasted makhana with salt and turmeric, popcorn with corn kernels (no ready-to-make sachets), roasted chana/chana dal, trail mix, and peanuts. We try to keep it all salty and not spicy.
Mouth Fresheners / Digestives
I love imli and dried amla, and it feels so good to eat during travel. I’m not into sauf but love other things. I always have amla supari in my bag during travel. It varies from dried amla, amla supari, to imli goli.
Dry Nuts
My little one loves cashews, so it is always in my bag. Additionally, I keep a mix of raisins, walnuts, almonds, and dates. This helps for a long journey. It is fulfilling and gives that boost during travel, and quite a mess-free.
Bakery & Cafe Items
Few things that are non-negotiable during my return journey from Pune to Sindhudurg. My dad gets them from here. Chutney Sandwich, Cheese Sandwich, or Chicken Sandwich. If we do car travel, this is usually our brunch or we have a bite or two before leaving on the car ride. Same goes with our flight journey, we carry it and have it when hungry, even if it is an hour-long journey.
Dry Snacks
This is a mix of local snacks or easily available in any stores. We have dry bhel, farsan, bhakarwadi, nachos, or some sweet cookies. A few shop alternatives are moong dal, aloo bhujia, and plain yellow shev. These have preservatives, but having them once in a while does not harm. If you are health-conscious, go for clean brands on Amazon or pick them before every journey.
Local Food
This differs as per my place of travel. If I’m in Sindhudurg, I carry a parcel from a local restaurant, and that is kurma puri, ghavane/amboli, and boiled corn. My MIL also makes amboli or ghavane for us along with dry coconut chutney. At times, mom makes chapati or any veggies without onion, as it becomes easy to eat and doesn’t get spoiled during a long journey.
I’m sure many of us might relate to this post today. Let me know your favorite travel-friendly food in the comments below. I might try them too. In addition to this, we make sure to stop and have local food from restaurants.
